KB01041 - Some Mini Display Port / Thunderbolt to HDMI adapters have better performance than others

SKU: AT-UHD-HDVS-300-KIT

Scenario: Some Mini Display Port / Thunderbolt to HDMI adapters have better performance than others. I.e. video passes from some brands but not others.

Troubleshooting:

  • Trying direct HDMI works fine
  • Trying name brand MDP to HDMI adapters works fine
  • Multiple HDMI cables have been tested

Solution: There are countless numbers of companies who produce Mini Display Port (MDP) or Thunderbolt to HDMI adapters. Not all companies have the same performance due to the chipsets they use in these adapters. Due to the fact that most of these adapters are passive (they do not have their own dedicated power source), they can interfere with the 5-volt current required for an HDMI video signal to pass. These adapters can also use poor quality chipsets that do not support all video resolutions which can thus cause video playback errors.

Atlona recommends using Belkin brand adapters as we have found these provide the most optimal performance: Model = F2CD024BT
