KB01081 - UHD-PRO3 analog audio outputs explained

SKUs: AT-UHD-PRO3-44M, AT-UHD-PRO3-66M, AT-UHD-PRO3-88M, AT-UHD-PRO3-1616M

Scenario:

Analog audio ports do not work on the AT-UHD-PRO3 Matrix

Explanation:

The Atlona AT-UHD-PRO3 matrices feature analog audio de-embedding where the available analog audio outputs are tied to the corresponding HDBaseT outputs that match their numbering structure (i.e. HDBaseT Output 1 and Analog Audio Output 1 are tied together). An example of this feature would be a Blu-ray player (set to 2-ch PCM audio playback) connected on input #1 of the AT-UHD-PRO3 and routed to HDBaseT output #3. This will not only pass the video and audio from the Blu-ray player to output #3, but analog audio port #3 will also output the de-embedded 2-ch PCM audio from the Blu-ray player. If the Blu-ray player were set for anything other than 2-ch PCM audio playback (e.g. Dolby, DTS, LPCM 5.1, etc.) the analog port would not carry any audio while the HDBaseT output will maintain the video/audio signal.

Please note the AT-UHD-PRO3 matrix family does not have the capability to down-mix audio (take Dolby 5.1 and bring it down to 2-ch PCM)

An easy way to visualize the audio de-embedding function is by looking at the back of the matrix. HDBaseT outputs with available analog audio outputs are numbered similarly (e.g. Ports #1-4 below highlighted in green). The AT-UHD-PRO3 matrices also offer HDBaseT outputs with mirrorable HDMI outputs. These HDMI outputs can be used to pass multi-channel audio/video to an AVR. These HDMI outputs can also be un-mirrored to be paired with other HDBaseT outputs, or used as standalone outputs.

If you are having an issue in getting this function to work, please see below for suggestions on how to troubleshoot the issue:

  • First, please confirm your sources have been set to output 2-ch PCM, otherwise, 5.1 channel can be used but you may only hear the Left and Right channels (no speech which is carried on the center channel). Please note some sources only have a Dolby ON/OFF setting. Turning this off defaults the unit to 2-ch PCM (such as AppleTV).
  • Once you have confirmed your source is outputting 2-ch PCM audio, please check that you’re able to pass audio/video from this source to an HDBaseT output of the matrix.
  • If you can get video and audio from an HDBaseT output (e.g. HDBaseT output #2), please confirm that you’re using analog audio output #2 and that your wiring on the analog audio is correct. The captive screw connector supports balanced and un-balanced audio output.
  • If you’re still not getting audio to pass, please try connecting another audio source to your amplifier and determine whether you can pass audio without issues. If one source can pass 2-ch PCM through your amplifier, the AT-UHD-PRO3 series matrix 2-ch PCM output should also pass.
